Introduction to Reiki
Reiki is pronounced as ray- key. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy. Reiki is a laying on hands healing technique which is thousands of year old. It is thought to have originated from Buddhist practice and was rediscovered in late 1800‟s/early 1900‟s by Mikao Usui, who was a Japanese Buddhist monk. It is simple yet powerful techniqu which can be easily learned by anyone.
Just like Solar Energy always existed and only in the last decade or so we have learnt to harness it commercially, so also Reiki energy has existed forever. It is a spiritual healing energy and always works for the highest and greatest good of the person receiving it. It is commonly also known as "laying of hands" healing energy.
Our body has energy flowing through it and around it. That's what EEG and ECG shows when done by doctors. There is now evidence that there is an aura around living things. That's an energy field also and is part of our energy body. Energy flows in our body via meridians and is stored at points known as Chakras.
Our thoughts, beliefs and actions affect the energy flow in and around our physical body and create disruptions in the flow thereby creating dis-ease in the body. Reiki is a highly intelligent spiritual energy and it knows how to correct these disruptions and balance the flow. It helps to create mind, body balance and harmony. As it clears and rejoins energy disruptions it clears unhealthy patterns, mends physical issues, speeds recovery, strengthens immune system etc.

How does Reiki heal?
We are alive because of the life force flowing through us. It flows within the physical body on the pathways called chakras, meridians and naadis. It also flows around us in our subtle body called the Aura. It nourishes the cells and organs of the body supporting them in their vital functions. When it is disrupted, it causes diminished function or dis-ease in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life force is responsive to thoughts, feelings, environmental pollution, psychological patterns, inherited patterns which are self limiting. It becomes disrupted when we accept, consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts, feelings about ourselves or inherit or create self limiting beliefs. These negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the energy flow, thus diminishing the vital functions of the body organs and cells.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around physical body where the negative thoughts or feelings are attached. This causes negative energy to break apart and fall away. In doing so, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

Reiki is powerful and gentle. It aides in healing of virtually every known illness and injury including serious problems like cancer, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, skin problems like cuts, burns, broken bones etc. It can heal a dying plant or a sick pet too. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance and has many benefits for both client and practitioner, including altered states of consciousness and spiritual experiences.

What Reiki is and What it is not
Reiki is not a religion. It beholds no doctrines, creeds or contradictions to the Universal Laws of Consciousness and Love. No matter where the person may be at a certain point in their life, Reiki will harmonize and embrace their philosophical center point, adding to it the Divine Presence. Infact, it brings people more profound understanding of the religion they practice as they get in touch with the experience rather than the intellectual concept of it.

It is also known commonly as "laying of hands". This energy will work always for your highest and greatest good and is passed to you by the healer laying hands on or above your body at various locations.
How does it feel to experience Reiki?
Some people feel Reiki as warmth, others feel cool. Some feel nothing at all. If the client feels nothing, this does not mean they are not receiving Reiki, only that their particular sensitivity level may not be quite as intense as others.
Reiki involves laying of hands by the healer on different parts of the body. It is not a massage but just gentle laying of hands. The basic hands positions are along the chakras and at various points on the face, legs, hands. Reiki healers are intuitively guided to move their hands to parts of the clients bodies where the most healing is needed. Some healers stick to the defined points on the body as taught to them by their master. Others use their intuition to identify areas that need healing. Either way, Reiki will always flow to the parts of the body that needs the most healing irrespective of where the hands are kept. It is a highly intelligent energy flow.
Who are Reiki Channels or healers?
Reiki Channels are people from all walks of life, all races, all occupations, who have received energy keys/ attunement from a qualified Reiki Master/Teacher. Everyone has this potential. We are all composed of this Universal Energy and can use it for healing. Those who go on to share and teach the system are helping to cleanse and purify the planet.
Can Reiki enhance my creativity?

You have to check your insurance to find out what all alternative therapies are covered. You can use your health spending account to cover cost of alternative treatments but check with your CPA about this. You can talk to your organization to subsidize Reiki treatments or to provide it on-site.
Can Reiki help with sports injuries or soreness?

With groups like the Society of Integrative Oncology, a multi-disciplinary organization of professionals, touting the advantages of complementary cancer treatment and recovery, new methodologies, including Reiki are gaining in popularity. More and more cancer centers and oncologists are beginning to recognize the benefits that these treatments – once dismissed with a snicker by those “in-the-know” – are providing for those who just don’t know where to turn to address issues like the pain and stress associated with cancer and its conventional treatments.
Complementary therapies - not to be confused with “alternative” therapies, which are unproven treatments – have gradually made their way to the forefront of cancer care as well-known oncologists who are lauded experts in their field begin to promote these supportive treatments as a natural part of cancer care. Even the National Institutes of Health operates a National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researching complementary therapies and then recommending proven ones for integration into cancer programs nationwide, including those associated with mesothelioma cancer.
Lately, the ancient form of spiritual healing known as Reiki (pronounced Ray-kee) has earned plenty of attention as a potential complementary therapy for all kinds of cancer, including malignant mesothelioma. Rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, Reiki was “rediscovered” in the early 20th century and became particularly popular in the late 1990s as Reiki Masters began to teach non-Buddhists that life energy flows through all persons, this technique strives to increase the life force energy of a sick individual, therefore helping him achieve better health and happiness.
Like many complementary therapies, Reiki takes a holistic approach – treating mind, body, and spirit – and is safe and natural. Many cancer patients who have tried it note an overall feeling of peace, relaxation, and well-being when the treatment is complete. Totally non-invasive, Reiki therapy involves the laying of hands on the fully-clothed patient by the Reiki practitioner. His/her hands travel through 12 different positions, staying in each place for about 5 minutes for a total of about an hour per treatment. The feeling of invigoration or tranquility results from the fact that Reiki causes the body's molecules to vibrate at a higher intensity, hence, dissolving energy blockages that lead to disharmony and disease, Reiki masters note. This assists in controlling pain, easing stress, or lessening side effects of traditional treatments like chemotherapy, including nausea and other debilitating problems for those battling their mesothelioma prognosis. It is also believed to improve immune function.
With continuous positive reactions from many cancer patients, cancer clinics such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offer Reiki classes for cancer patients, including Sloan Kettering mesothelioma patients on a regular basis as well as in-service classes for their hospital staff. Other well-known hospitals to jump on the Reiki bandwagon include Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Columbia Presbyterian, the Yale Center, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The list continues to grow as patients use tools like the internet to advertise their positive reactions to this ancient healing art, enticing others to give it a try.
