Sports involves a very strong mental component especially if you are playing competitive. Besides learning the technical aspects of a game, it is very important to develop the mental aspects of the game as well.
Many athletes choke, get nervous, lose focus and concentration when playing high visibility tournaments. However talking to number of coaches nationally and internationally, I have realized that mental training forms a very small part of the overall training of the athlete even though nearly 90% of the game is mental after a certain point of time.
One can start early to develop the right mental aspects, attitudes, toughness, learning to be in the zone, not allowing distractions to lose focus and concentration during playing etc.
Hypnotherapy is very naturally geared towards helping you with your mental game. It's in your subconscious mind that you store all the beliefs you have about your game, the habits and behaviors you exhibit, the stress triggers, pre-game anxiety, post game self talk, during game self talk etc.
Carew had suffered an injury, which while technically had healed, left him nonetheless with some pain (perhaps psychosomatic, but real enough to him), and an elevated sense of self doubt. A hypnotist was consulted, and he was instructed in mastering self hypnosis.Carew then came back to the best season of his entire career, with a batting score of almost .400, and went on to win 'The most valuable player award'!
His strategy is to "search out and correct weaknesses in every step I take."
“Thompson at large”-The inner athlete writes:
In researching this article, I discovered for myself the truth of (Michael) Murphy's Law when I spoke with athletes bound for the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. They were willing to talk about their uncanny experiences, but only off the record. A Virginia distance runner said that after a hard workout, he sometimes closes his eyes and sees what appear to be organs, blood vessels, muscles, and cells.
An Ohio swimmer described being able "while swimming, to see the entire pool from a larger, raised-up perspective and anticipate the movements of other swimmers." Source “Thompson at large”-The inner athlete.
A Wall Street Journal article (February 11, 2002) brings recognition to the field of hypnotherapy. Bronze medal Olympic champion Adam Malysz used hypnosis for his ski jump victory: "And before ascending the ramp and lurching down that icy slide in the 90 meter event, he descended an imaginary staircase-20 slow deep steps into a trance."
Eleven hypnotherapists accompanied the Russian Olympic team in 1956. The Soviets and Eastern block countries have used hypnosis much longer than other countries for sports enhancement.
Time Magazine reported in a cover story on the 1984 Olympics that on the night before the finals in women's gymnastics, famous athlete, Mary Lou Retton, then age 16, lay in bed at the Olympic Village mentally rehearsing her performance ritual. She had done the same on hundreds of previous nights, visualizing herself performing all her routines perfectly--imaging in her mind all the moves and rehearsing them again and again. The result, of course, was a performance of perfection, presented with charm, poise and confidence, culminating in a gold medal.
"Your mind does not know the difference between fantasy and reality, so what you picture in your mind, the body can achieve!" Proof of that statement has been provided countless times. Mary Lou pictured a perfect performance in her mind. Her body produced it.
Phil Jackson (NBA head coach) insists that the Chicago Bulls practiced daily self-hypnosis when he coached Michael Jordan and the Bulls to their 6 NBA Championships.
Later, after coaching the Los Angeles Lakers to a win in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals in 2002,Jackson credited his morning practice of self-hypnosis, meditation, and visualization with giving the Lakers the belief that they could win.
Hypnosis is one of the mighty secrets used by star athletes and other famous people. To give you some ideas, Tiger Woods, one of the greatest pro golfers of all times uses hypnosis regularly. He not only uses it to enhance his performance but it keeps him focused and directed on and off of the golf course. Tiger is very spiritual and wholeheartedly believes in the power of hypnosis. Watch Tiger Woods the next time that he is golfing on TV. Pay close attention to what he does just before he makes his move. He blinks his eyes twice. This is a technique that he learned in hypnosis which is his way of putting himself right where he needs to be in order to excel at his game. It puts him another place where there is nothing but positive focus put on the task at hand. Read more at here.
Kobe Bryant
Boxer Ken Norton used hypnosis training before his famous victory over Mohammed Ali.
Mark McGwire (baseball player/home run champ) uses hypnosis to help him relax.
Famous tennis player,Jimmy Connors, used hypnosis in winning the U.S. Open Championship.
Jack Nicklaus claims that his success is entirely owed to practicing concentration and visualization
